WINNERS' INTERVIEW
2024-2025
Hamed Nobari
Islamic Republic of Iran
Short Film Competition / Super-Short Film Category
Grand Prize
ー What made you decide to enter the Nikon Film and Photo Contest?
In addition to filmmaking in Iran, I also distribute my own films, as well as those of my colleagues, at international film festivals. This experience has made me familiar with many festivals around the world. When I first saw the call for submissions for the Nikon Film and Photo Contest on an Iranian website, I immediately thought my film "The Small Red, Big Blue" would be a perfect fit for the Super-Short Film Category. The film runs approximately 40 to 50 seconds and addresses a global issue—the environmental crisis. I was eager to discover whether audiences in Japan would connect with its form and message as others have. This curiosity motivated me to enter this contest in person.
ー Do you have any episodes to share related to creating your award-winning Nikon Film and Photo Contest work (photo or film)?
The initial idea for this film originated from an Iranian caricature created by Emad Salehi. I wondered how I could dramatize this caricature and adapt it for the medium of cinema. The concept and content were centered around the environmental crisis—an issue that nearly everyone in the world is currently facing, and one that poses challenges for governments and nations worldwide. I began by focusing on the form of the film, which I believe is the most crucial aspect. I decided to present it in a single shot. While this approach appeared technically difficult and perhaps even impossible, my team and I thrive on hard work and are eager to embrace new challenges.

ー Tell us about your recent activities. Have there been any changes in your career and/or other aspects of your life since winning your Nikon Film and Photo Contest award?
Currently, I am working on two short scripts. The first is an adaptation of an Iranian short story, while the second has a different and more unconventional atmosphere. Given my attention to detail and commitment to filmmaking, I know that bringing these scripts to life will be a lengthy and demanding process. Independent filmmaking in Iran is closely tied to the creator’s current emotions and experiences. I might end up putting both scripts aside to explore new ideas—only time will tell what I decide to do. This award has truly made a significant impact on my life and career. It has given me hope and additional motivation to pursue my filmmaking journey. The influence of this award will stay with me forever, and I am genuinely thankful for it.
ー What does shooting photos or films mean to you?
Cinema and filmmaking, for me, have a concept like a dream. A dream that makes the suffering and bitterness of this world sweet and bearable for a moment.
