WINNERS' INTERVIEW
2022-2023
Austin Garcia
Philippines
Photo Competition / Single Photo Category
Grand Prize
ー What made you decide to enter the Nikon Photo Contest?
I applied last year mainly because my peers kept pushing me to submit my work. They thought my evocative black and white photos would fit well with what Nikon usually picks as winners. Even though it was my first time to enter this level of competition, reading the theme convinced me to enter, and I felt confident I had something worth showing.
ー Do you have any episodes to share related to creating your award-winning Nikon Photo Contest work (photo or film)?
It still feels unreal to see my winning photo. I took it during a festival back home - I wasn't even thinking about contests or shooting behind the scenes. The festival was in full swing, people everywhere, and I saw a child holding onto what looked like their father - this quiet, intimate moment in all the chaos. I just shot it instinctively, going with the flow. It was only when I got home and looked through my photos that I realized how powerful that moment was, more so than I'd expected. In a way, I feel like it was meant to be - the photo found me, rather than the other way around.
ー Tell us about your recent activities. Have there been any changes in your career and/or other aspects of your life since winning your Nikon Photo Contest award?
I've been shooting and documenting my personal life more than ever. Winning the contest really fired up my passion for photography, and I just bought my dream camera to help me navigate and shoot in the streets. I've been recognized by some photography clubs here in the Philippines and also been asked to give workshops and talks, which has really helped establish my credentials. It's shown me that if you believe in a dream, it can happen. The contest win even gave me a chance to continue my college studies.
ー What does shooting photos or films mean to you?
Photography is my way of reflecting my life experiences and using these 'frozen moments’ to remind myself of the richness of the human experience. Each photo captures something real about being human that connects deeply with viewers emotionally. I take pictures as a way of expressing to other people the life I lived, but primarily for myself - it's like my personal visual diary of life.
ー What’s your message to people considering entering the Nikon Film and Photo Contest?
Take the risk and try! If you really believe in your work, trust me that the Nikon Film and Photo Contest will see its value. Capture what moves you, and don't overthink it - sometimes, the best moments find you unexpectedly. Trust your eye, and let your passion show in your work. Think of this as celebrating our shared love of art and life, and best of luck to everyone entering.
