NIKON

WINNERS' INTERVIEW

2022-2023

Michael Snyder

United States of America
Photo Competition / Single Photo Category
Excellence Award

ー What made you decide to enter the Nikon Photo Contest?

I'd been following the contest for years but never thought my photos were good enough compared to what I'd seen. After getting my Nikon D750 and gaining more experience and confidence, I entered the 2023-2024 Single Photo Competition. I never expected to get the Excellence Award or any award. My family and friends kept pushing me to enter, and I'm so glad they did.

ー Do you have any episodes to share related to creating your award-winning Nikon Photo Contest work (photo or film)?

When I photographed my wife with her mother, I had no idea how much it would mean to others, especially people dealing with Alzheimer's in their families. Looking back at all the photos of my wife and her family spending time with their mother, seeing how it affected them - and me - it really opened my eyes to what photography can mean and changed how I look at what I'm shooting.

ー Tell us about your recent activities. Have there been any changes in your career and/or other aspects of your life since winning your Nikon Photo Contest award?

Since winning the Excellence Award, I've felt more confident about entering other contests. Being retired gives me the freedom to explore new photo opportunities, though I've found there's plenty to shoot right in my own back yard.

ー What does shooting photos or films mean to you?

When I take a photograph, I'm capturing a moment that will never happen again. That moment can be viewed, judged, cherished, and remembered forever. When my work is good enough for others to see, I feel like I've given something to the world, which means a lot to me.

ー What’s your message to people considering entering the Nikon Film and Photo Contest?

Even if you don't feel experienced enough, just do it! Being judged by industry experts and showing your work alongside some of the world’s most talented photographers is a reward in itself. But you have to take that first step! Good luck, and keep shooting!
