This photo was shot from my 12th floor balcony in North Miami Beach in June 2010. The storm was located about 30 miles east of the Beach, slightly west of Bimini.

When I first moved to Miami Beach I was amazed at the amount of lightning activity during the summer months. The constant electricity in the air inspired me to try to capture nature's raw power on camera. I bought a DSLR, a couple of lenses and tripod and sat on my balcony at night whenever I saw lightning in the distance. It took a few thousand shots to get this one. In the end, having the camera pointed in the right direction and presssing the shutter at just the right time takes quite a bit of luck and a lot of patience.
